Land use monitoring

NCMA S.A. aims to provide comprehensive and timely information about forms of land cover and land use and changes to them, with the purpose of the proper management of the environment and the natural wealth of the country. It has therefore undertaken the implementation at national level of a project entitled “GMES/Copernicus Initial Operations (GIO) Land monitoring 2011-2013” or GIO LAND [Regulation (EU) No. 911/2010 - Pan- EU component], which is co-funded by the European Environment Agency (EEA).

The project focuses on the creation and provision of multi-purpose information to a large community of users (e.g. changing forms of land cover/land use at various scales and at different periods, biophysical variables for dynamic land monitoring, and improved access to reference data).

Specifically for Greece, the project involves correcting the national map of forms of land cover/land use in 2000, recording forms of land cover/land use in the years 2006 and 2012, and changes to them; and the checking and confirming that the following five information levels are correct: forests, meadows, wetlands, construction and bodies of water.

For the implementation of GIO LAND satellite images are used from LANDSAT 7, SPOT and the European Space Agency IRS, and geospatial data from NCMA S.A. and specifically single large-scale cartographic foundations on a scale of 1:5,000, data from forest maps, data from the project "Delimitation of forests and woodland" and coastline, as well as data from other sources, such as settlements, wetlands, roads, etc.

For the execution of the project, a contract has been signed between NCMA S.A. and the EEA and the Directorate of Forest Maps & Natural Environment has prepared a remodeled National Implementation Plan for the Project, which was accepted by the EEA. The project has a total budget of218,000, 87% from the EEA, and will be completed by July 2015.

The project results will be available free to all interested parties after its completion.
