Monitoring of wildfire-stricken areas

Since April 2010, NCMA S.A. has been operating a remote supervision system to detect unauthorized building activities in the NE part of Attica, which suffered considerable damage from the 2009 wildfires. The «Remote supervised mapping» system was established in accordance with Law 3818/2010 for the protection of wildfire-stricken areas.

More specifically, orthoimages are produced for these areas every two months. Following each new session, images are compared to those captured in the preceding bimonthly period to identify changes to areas outside the limits of legitimate conurbations or approved town planning regulations. These changes mainly refer to potential unauthorized development or supplementary building activities or landscaping operations (e.g. land clearing, excavations etc.).

The results of the monitoring and change detection process are communicated to the competent Special Demolition Department operated by the Environmental Inspectorate of the Ministry of Environment & Energy for further review, assessment and enforcement of the applicable legislation.

Refer below to the map of the remotely supervised area as well as indicative examples of identified changes.
